We cover informally his years in both Cuba and New York City which will include rare recordings he did for Verne Records, a single he did in Curacao, and a recording he did in his home.

Hijuelos' novel "The Mambo Kings" became a major Hollywood movie starring, Antonio Banderas and Celia Cruz making a guest appearance. Hijuelos chronicles his life as the child of pre- revolutionary Cuban immigrants in the rough part of New York City in the early 50's and his coming of age. He discusses identity, family, love, Latin music and jazz.

  • Maestra is about how in the summer of 1961 100, 000 Cuban teenagers, most of them girls, went into the Cuban countryside to teach people to read. Maestra documents this amazing literacy movement that taught an entire country to read and write. It documents the process of how the lives a generation of Cuban women were deeply transformed. Maestra captures the element of joy and creativity that characterizes revolutionary change. We feature a panel discussion with the filmmaker Catherine Murphy discussing how and why she made this inspiring, upbeat film.

  • Commentary by Saul Landau on Cuba on the 58th anniversary of the 26th of July’s insurgent attack on the Moncada barracks. often considered the birth of the 1959 Cuban revolution, led by Fidel Castro. It was this 2y ear insurrectionary war that Che Guevara received his first taste of guerrilla warfare as a significant and heroic participant. Landau's commentary tonight is on his most recent California prison visit with actor Danny Glover to Geraldo Hernandez of the Cuban Five.
  • Julieta Kusnir discusses the California budget cuts and their impact.
  • Nina Serrano talks with artist Alfonso Maciel about his experience with political art, community and the 1979 Sandinista revolution in Nicaragua.
  • New music by an interesting Mexican folklore band, Pa ‘sumecha from their new experimental CD called "Son Jarocho". Son Jarocho refers to a musical dance form, where the percussion is provided by the dancers feet on a board. The musicians sing the various verses.
