Tonight we focus on the DVD "Maestra" by Catherine Murphy and offer it as a premium to listeners for renewing or subscribing to KPFA. This film is food for the spirit. It will bring you UP and broaden your view of history.
- Maestra is about how in the summer of 1961 100, 000 Cuban teenagers, most of them girls, went into the Cuban countryside to teach people to read. Maestra documents this amazing literacy movement that taught an entire country to read and write. It documents the process of how the lives a generation of Cuban women were deeply transformed. Maestra captures the element of joy and creativity that characterizes revolutionary change. We feature a panel discussion with the filmmaker Catherine Murphy discussing how and why she made this inspiring, upbeat film.
- We also offer a tix giveaway to hear Orcestra La Moderna Tradicion at Yoshi's. You may be the lucky ticket winner.
- Listen and enjoy!
